The film

Every audition location in the film is the Barrow Group.Alexander Hagani, director
  • Alexander wrote much of it during a one-year directing program at The Barrow Group in New York, where he met the entire cast. The audition room on screen is his actual classroom.
  • The running shot, a nod to Frances Ha: the DP popped out of a car sunroof with the camera while the producer drove down 38th and 36th Streets, two of Midtown’s busiest. Three takes.
  • The whole film was shot on one lens, an Angénieux Optimo zoom, inspired by Succession. It never came off the camera.
  • Four days, across neighborhoods all over New York, with no permits. Nothing was set on the ground in public and the camera stayed handheld, so the crew could get in and get out.
  • The station manager who tells Anne “the dog’s gotta go in the bag” is played by the film’s production designer – who kept getting stopped between takes by tourists asking for directions.
  • The pizza place is L’Industrie Pizzeria, shot one morning as they prepped to open. By the time the crew wrapped, there was already a line down the block.
